In today’s WG2E Epublishing News Round-Up, we’re talking about Amazon rebranding their Indie Epub tool from Amazon’s DTP (Digital Text Platform) to their new KDP which stands for Kindle Direct Publishing.
So in a nutshell, Amazon DTP is now KDP.
And there are some fabulous blogs out there venturing educated guesses at why the change and what the change could bring.
Here’s the scoop:
I Love My Kindle – Amazon Opening Self-Publishing To More Media
In this piece – written by one of my favorite on-Kindle bloggers Bufo Calvin – it’s mentioned that since a major rebranding effort like this one takes a few big bucks, there must be some major big reasons for the change.
Calvin suggests that perhaps the following may be the reasons:
1. Amazon added “Kindle” to the name b/c the Kindle as an Ereader and now as the Go-To Indie Epublishing Meca is a brand CEO Jeff Bezos and company no longer fears is a brand that won’t be recognized.
***Heck, for many people, not in the business, they think all E-readers are called Kindle and that if you’re an Indie Epubbed Author that means you’re published on Kindle.
2. Amazon took off “Digital” and replaced it with “Direct”, says Calvin, to perhaps help persuade writers considering the Indie Epub route via Amazon that you don’t have to be a Techno Brainiac to publish your books using Amazon’s service. Also, in the same spirit, Amazon may have taken out the word “Platform”, a very techie concept.
3. But here’s the super cool guesstimate Calvin presented…perhaps by removing the word “Text” from their acronym, Amazon is preparing for the reality that someday very soon, we won’t be using our Kindles just for reading. By renaming their service to KDP – Kindle Direct Publishing – that leaves the door open for publishing much more than books (i.e. text content) – so how ’bout music, videos/movies, TV, etc.
***Ooooo and that means…maybe a new Kindle Tablet too!!! Look-out iPad!!!
Wayyy cool possibilities with this Amazon rebranding…right?
Here’s another one of my favorite on-Kindle Blogs that covered this story:
So what do y’all think?
What does it mean that Amazon DTP is now KDP?
The Best of The WG2E Epublishing News Round-Up Wishes — D. D. Scott

I’m not sure what it actually means, but it is a lot easier to remember.
That’s always a good thing when it comes to branding a service.
It is easier to remember for sure, India! Perhaps because it actually says what the service is – a Kindle Direct Publishing service.
And, I know too, that it sure helps my Techno Dunce self to think of it that way versus in some computer programming terms which honestly, freak me out! LOL!!!
Same here, Tonya, on can’t waiting to see what the next Kindle brings…and the thought of a Kindle Tablet…well…that’s just more than I can take with only my first cup of coffee for the day consumed!!! LOL!!!
I think you’re on to something about the Kpad thing. I just completed the KindleNation Survey, and it was all over the technologies you use & what more features and apps would you like to see on your new & Improved Kindle of the future, and what features /apps do you use now?
As I answered & then checked the survey results, I realized I need to read more of the instruction booklet! All of us Christmas recipients were so delighted, we downloaded some books & off we went! LOL!
Movies, music, whatever other forms of media you could imagine… the technology is there for the Kindle to expand and put into our hands. It boggles my mind when I look at my small collection of vintage readers from my childhood, how far we’ve come in reading vehicles, print to digital media, music and movie technology.
It is mind-boggling for sure, Pamela!
Here’s a fabulous resource I used to figure out my Kindle – by Kindle Nation Daily’s own Stephen Windwalker…his new book KINDLE FREE FOR ALL…for a Techno Dunce, like me, I learned all the how-to’s for all the multi-media Kindle tools. Here’s the link:
http://www.amazon.com/KINDLE-FREE-ALL-DATE-ebook/dp/B004GXAWLO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&s=digital-text&qid=1296054838&sr=1-1
And yay to you for doing the survey!!! I linked to that on my FB profile today! Fab info, and I can’t wait to read Stephen’s analysis of it!!!
It means I can’t buy anymore electronic gadgets because I already have enough for one person. I wonder if the Kindle tablet would be less expensive than the iPad.
