Refresh Button OCD

As some of you may know, Ereader News Today selected STUCK WITH A STIFF as their Book of the Day yesterday. Obviously, D.D. and I were really excited about having been chosen.

D.D. had already been featured on the site in the past, so I’m sure she handled herself with unimpeachable reasonableness and dignity. After all, this wasn’t her first rodeo.

Myself, on the other hand…

Let’s just say that’s a whole other kettle of fish.

I spent a few hours (until 4 AM) the night before going back every few minutes to refresh the ENT site in anticipation of the feature going live, only to learn that they don’t update until 9:30 AM. Well played, David. Well played, indeed.

But the overly obsessive fun didn’t stop there. Oh no. Not even close.

I managed to check the book and author rankings well over 100 times (well, well over) yesterday all while babysitting two nephews and a niece. The upshot is that I got almost no writing done due to this obsession with the refresh button.

Of course, the book will sell or not sell regardless of how often I choose to look in on its progress. I was quite conscious of this fact. However, I was also seemly powerless to resist the urge to refresh the pages over and over and over again.

How about you, WG2E peeps? Have you ever been bitten by the refresh bug? Been completely at the mercy of the urge to update? Please tell me I’m not the only one out there. I mean…I can’t be, right?

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with a very special button.

David Slegg is an Amazon Bestselling Humorous Mystery Author writing the STUCK WITH A series with Amazon & B&N Top 100 Bestselling Humorous Mystery & RomCom Author D.D. Scott.

    Congratulations and good luck :)

  2. Julie Day says:

I check my sales and downloads at least 3 times a day. Get v excited when another ebook has sold esp on Kobo.

  3. Patrice says:

You’re not alone, David. I did the same thing when I had a book on ENT. What a thrilling ride, and watching the numbers jump late in the evening – well, who wants to go to bed?
Congrats – hope you sold a ton.

  4. Angela Brown says:

I have a sneaky suspicion you are not the only one with an OCD for that refresh button :-)

  5. D. D. Scott says:

Lol! I did the same thing from the hospital all night long! It was the one bright spot as we worked with my DH’s nurses for pain management following his double knee replacement.

I was thrilled at 3 AM when I saw we’d hit Amazon’s Movers & Shakers List for the second time with this book and are now ranked around #204!!! ENT readers rock!!! We’ve sold almost 750 copies in the last 24 hours and should hit Amazon’s Top 100 later this morning!

Thanks bunches to all of u WG2E-Land Peeps who shared the luv!!! And also thank u sooo much for all of the wonderful wishes for my DH! I’d give anything to take the pain for him. But

  6. D. D. Scott says:

Oops…not sure where the rest of my msg went! Anyhoo…I’ve been reading all of your kind words to my DH and he sooo appreciates them as do I. It gives him something nice to focus on through the pain…along with my hourly OCD reports about our ENT stats!

    • David Slegg says:

I didn’t last past about 2:45 last night, thanks to the previous night’s refreshing. This is pretty exciting.

So glad this is helping to distract your DH from his pain, if even just a little bit. Wishing him a speedy recovery and both of you the best over these next few months of recovery.

  7. Lois Lavrisa says:

Congratulations to both of you! Yahoo:)

  8. You are SO not alone, David. Been there, done that, and going back with a Book Bub ad in a few days. Those are such fun, unproductive days. :) Congrats to both you and DeeDee!

    • David Slegg says:

      Thanks, Stacey!

It’s good to know I’m not the only one.

Best of luck with your big Book Bub ad! Wishing you a successful day, even if it does end up being unproductive.

  9. SK Holmesley says:

Congratulations to both of you! What fun! Did Beulah get an extra treat?

    • David Slegg says:

      Thanks, SK!

Well, I did go out to see her just a little bit ago, but she didn’t get a treat. I think she has a long way to go before she’s on the positive side of the karma equation. ;-)

  10. Glynis Smy says:

You can refresh a page to see how your book is progressing? Really? Gosh, I never knew that! *Believe it if you will dot com* ;)

  11. Alison Pensy says:

Congrats! I did this when The Amulet went free a couple of years ago. It is addicting. Now though, I only check my sales a couple of times a month :-)

  12. I need to go into stat-checking rehab. When one’s mood fluctuates based on high or low rankings, one definitely needs to detox from the refresh button! I’ve tried to go cold-turkey, but so far it’s failed. Maybe I need a 12-step program.

  13. Yep, I’ve been bitten by the Refresh bug. :) And ENT is the perfect catalyst for it. Their readers are wonderfully responsive. Congrats on the great run!

  14. Congrats to you both.

DD: wishing your DH a speedy recovery.

I have an ENT Book of the Day spot coming up for Badwater. On Valentine’s Day! I know what I’m gonna be lovin…that refresh button :)

  15. Hooray for the two of you. I know the feeling well. First book published January 7, 2013. By the end of the month I was into double digits. Ten, count’m ten sales. I am elated and just waiting for the rest of the relative to shoo the moths out of their wallets. Happy to have earned enough royalties to have paid for the ISBN. Well, best get back to publishing the next nine books to use up those ISBNs. Best to hubby.

  16. I feel your pain, David!!! I waited up till midnight last night to learn the same lesson. And I’m there today, with my book in the ENT bargain bin (An Eye For Danger– And though I’ve sold several dozens of books in the last few hours, Amazon is begrudging memuch of a rise in the ranks. Will have to wait till midnight to see much movement there. In the meantime, trying to focus on the fact that it’s my BIRTHDAY and that I’m not even supposed to be working! Ha!

ENT was really cool and out of all my bday week dates, purposely put me up there on my birthday and sent bday wishes. Cool group, eh? And totally worth the investment in a world where few advertising avenues pay off, especially for indie authors!

thanks for the fun post and best of luck to you!
