Happy Sunday, WG2E-Land!!!
Earlier this year, I shared with y’all that 2012 was going to be about Purple Cow Marketing in D. D. Scott-ville.
Today, I’m treatin’ y’all to a superfab fun peek into just how I’m doing that…
It starts with this Country Chart-Topping debut release from Country Music Rising Star Kip Moore:
What does Kip’s song “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck” have to do with D. D. Scott?
Here’s the scoop…
Kip wrote this super-catchy tune with a family friend of mine Dan Couch.
Dan and I are from the same hometown, and our families are connected in a bunch of fun ways…for example, his brother and I graduated together, the house he grew up in used to belong to my Great Aunt, and his brother’s wife’s brother – the same one I graduated with – is married to our very own David Slegg’s sister! Got that?! I can remember listening to Dan sing a song he wrote just for his brother’s wedding during the reception. Yep, we’re all small town kids to the max!!!
Okay then…
Dan and Kip’s debut song “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck” is about a truck just like my debut book – BOOTSCOOTIN’ BLAHNIKS – has my hero and heroine meet when she rear-ends the back of his pickup truck.
BOOTSCOOTIN’ BLAHNIKS is also set in a saloon I based on Nashville TN’s A-mazing Wildhorse Saloon.
The Wildhorse Saloon is famous for their bootscootin’ lessons and dance floor, their fried pickles (which I feature in my book) and their live entertainment featuring all the hottest Country Music Superstars.
In the mean time, I’m now a VIP Sponsor of Nashville’s wonderful Mystery Readers and Writers Conference – Killer Nashville – which is in late August each year in Music City.
Here’s where the Purple Cow Promotion comes in…
“What If”, I asked myself…
What If I got together with Dan (and possibly Kip too) and the three of us did a “Writers Round Table” event at The Wildhorse Saloon?!
In other words, how ’bout an Evening at the Mic with Dan and I (and Kip, if his schedule allows) to show how both song writers and story writers come up with their ideas and how they then turn those ideas into bestsellers?!
How fun of a genre mash-up and Purple Cow Idea is that?!
So…that’s what I’m doing!
I’m working with the Wildhorse Saloon to make this event happen on their stage Friday, August 24th during Killer Nashville!
I’m treating all 500 Attendees of Killer Nashville to the Event as my D. D. Scott-ville Bootscootin’ Bash!
And, it appears tickets will also be available to the public.
I’m finishing a deal with The Wildhorse in which I’ll have the second and third floors of The Wildhorse for a private party for all my Killer Nashville Peeps with fried pickles and bbq too!
While the bottom floor of the saloon will remain open to the public for ticket sales and cover charges.
This is the perfect example of how y’all can think totally outside the box. In other words, use the niche elements of your books – for me, bootscootin’, trucks, and Music City – to come up with totally unique, one-of-a-kind Purple Cow Promotions for your brand and your books.
It’s Your Turn, WG2E-Land: What are the niche elements in your Ebooks and let’s brainstorm together superfab fun ways to Purple Cow Style Promote them…

OK. My niche and I say brand is magic. I am currently working on a young children’s book where the boy’s socks tickle him and make him cleverer than he is, but only when he thinks he is good at something. I hope for this to get trad pubbed and turned into a series.
My other novels are for YA, Guardian Angels who can teleport themselves to the location where they are needed. And my forthcoming adult romance eseries where a dead aunt comes to life from a photo, flashing purple colours, to help her relatives get their lives back on track. How about those? I have been posting on PInterest different pictures that will go with these books, and plan to do so when my romance series comes out, hopefully next month.
Superfab cool, Julie!!!
So, definitely for your first children’s book, you’ve got to do something with “socks”…maybe with each book bought, you donate a pair of children’s socks to an orphanage and/or shelter of some sort. OR maybe each month, you give away a special pair of socks to your readers. OR maybe you have socks made with some image from your book on ‘em and give those away.
Lots of great possibilities there!!!
I’d give away some sort of Angels for the YA and perhaps purple photo frames for the Romance book.
Are you beginning to see how you can work “products” in with your books for multi-medium promo?
Oh yes. You have given me great idea for promo for my books. With my children’s books, when I hope they get published, I was thinking of doing workshops with clothes/socks and getting the children to think about what magic they could do.
Have to think about what sort of angels I can give when I publish my next angel book later this year. And good idea for purple photo frames for my romance series. Will keep all these ideas in mind.
Luuuvvv that idea, Julie…some magic trick using a sock…
brilliant work d.d.
nothing special like that from me, yet
still gettin’ my work digitized and out there, but what great inspiration you provide, thanks!
“Yet” was your operative word, Adan!
So while you’re getting your Ebooks ready to go be thinking of the themes and concepts in your work that would lend themselves to other mediums and products too!
Thanks Bunches for the superfab sweet shout-out!!!
Another great post, DD. Gives me lots to think about!
That’s what it’s all about here at The WG2E, Elizabeth…writers helping writers reach readers…including in superfab fun, out-of-the-box, Purple Cow ways!
I can’t wait to hear what you come up with for your wonderful books!!!
My goodness, DD, how you manage to keep on top of everything and still have space in your brain for such great ideas is really a mystery to me!
I love the idea – what a great way to engage people and do something a little different, too. Fantastic!
Thanks bunches, Talli!
I think all my years on various philanthropic boards, always the idea chick and planner for big Signature Events for fund-raising has served me well.
It is about engaging peeps in unique, sure to be remembered ways. That’s what sets you apart as an artist, no matter the genre.
Any promo you do has to “hook” readers just like your books do too…but the promo gets ‘em to the book to begin with.
DD, you’re truly SuperWoman & WonderWoman combined! Another brilliant idea to attract and entertain your readers!
Thanks sooo very much, Ruth!
In today’s multi-media world, it is about finding unique, multi-media ways to attract and entertain readers!!!
It’s not just about using our Ebook medium. There are tons of mediums to use to first attract a reader!!!
And by focusing on the niche elements in each of our books, we can all find totally out-of-the-box ways to do just that!!!
AWESOME idea D.D.! Sounds like SO much fun! Hope to be there!
It is gonna be one heckuva bootscootin’ great time, Jeanne! And WooHooo’s all-around that you’ll be part of the fun!!!
Get out your dancin’ boots!!!
Woot! Your party sounds great, D.D.! As usual, you’ve got me thinking, Girlfriend.
Ohhh yeahhh, Alicia!
For you, I envision this Dancing with The Stars type of ballroom bliss!!!
What a fantastic idea, D.D. I have no idea how you come up with such wonderful ideas, manage to stay on top of everything you have going, write and sleep. Do you sleep? I’m not convinced you do. LOL I was thinking about the Nashville Con but wasn’t sure I could afford it right now. But, I’m going to give it a try. Hopefully I’ll see you there!
I do sleep, Rhonda! LOL! In fact, I very seldom get less than 8 to 9 hours per night…I’m a total follow the sun and the chickens kinda gal…up at sunrise and in bed sometimes before it sets.
Part of the reason I am so productive, I think…because I’m always well-rested.
I’m tickled y’all are luuuvvvin’ all my quirky crazy fun ideas…they’re just crazy enough, they’ll work!!!
And WooHooo…I’d luuuvvv to bootscoot with you at my Bootscootin’ Bash!!!
Good luck with your bash!
I’ve follow a Facebook page that is for female fans of football. Recently I sent a message to the owner of the page since I had a question or 2 about training camp and trades because while I love football I really don’t pay attention to what happens outside the season. She was very receptive and and said to let her know when the book came out – I said sure and that if she wanted I could send her the football romance I had now (Playing For Keeps). She said she might mention it on the website and Facebook page. All it cost me was copy of the book and postage (she doesn’t have an eReader)
I hope she likes it and this pans out! The page is closing in on 30,000 likes.
Atta Girl, Liz!!!
Way to work it using your book’s football niche!
Excellent!!!
You just full of surprises!! Good for you!
Thanks sooo much, Jamie!
I just have a ball thinkin’ outside-the-box then makin’ it happen!!!
Great post!! I actually enjoy promoting and I had the BEST time when I promoted my first time travel historical romance (I’ve got the rights back and will be indie pubbing it and several others later this year–yahoo!). The setting is 1888 San Diego when Wyatt Earp lived there so I immediately tried to find ways to piggyback onto historical organizations’ events. My favorite promotion was in conjunction with The Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation’s Annual National Historic Preservation Week. We created a “Brothel Tour” led by a costumed guide who portrayed the famous madame Ida Bailey, who was also in the novel. We toured the Gaslamp Quarter, visited sites that were brothels and saloons in Earp’s day, literally walking through history. The well-attended walking tour ended at the Horton Grand Hotel for a reception and booksigning. So-o fun!
A “Brothel Tour”…now that’s out-of-the-box superfab, Janet!!!
I’m sooo putting that on my Bucket List!
U Go, Girl!!!
Just wonderful!!!
Way to go, D.D.!!!
You did it again.
Thanks Bunches, David!
I’m havin’ a big ol’ ball with this one!!!
And I know sing that song all day long…
oops…should be “I now sing”…more coffee, please…
