TGIF, WG2E-Land Peeps!
Here’s a fun way to kick-off the weekend…
Check out The Chronicled Adventures of Sam the Intern!
A few weeks ago, I shared with you that I’d hired an Intern for D. D. Scott-ville, The WG2E and The RG2E.
(Here she is with her really terrific boyfriend Kevin
)
Y’all quickly dubbed her Sam the Intern, and she luuuvvvs that!
She’s havin’ a ball getting started on all her new projects, and she’s decided to blog about her experiences!
That way, while she’s busy creating all kinds of wonderful things for D. D. Scott-ville, WG2E and RG2E, we can learn tons more about all-things graphic design plus organizational tips and tools for running Epublishing Empires. She’ll share all her triumphs and oopsie daisies too! And she’ll give y’all terrific ideas as to how you can use Interns in your own Epublishing Empires!
For example, along with her design work (on everything from postcards and ads, to new mascots for WG2E and RG2E, to superfab tchotchkes for reader conferences), she’ll be compiling a bunch of the analytics I’ve been tracking for all three sites. It’s great to have all that data, but you gotta actually look at it and use it, right?! LOL! She’s also the Ebook Gifting Queen over at RG2E as in she’s the superfab chick who actually sends out all the Ebook Gifts I treat readers to each and every day. And she runs our Twitter Parties, and will be in charge of all of my D. D. Scott-ville Special Events.
C’mon along and follow her adventures as we turn D. D. Scott-ville, The WG2E and The RG2E into multi-media extravaganzas!!!
It’s Your Turn, WG2E-Land: Have any of you partnered with an Intern yet? What kinds of projects can you envision having an Intern do for your Epublishing Empires?

I’ve not partnered with an intern yet, but I’ve been an intern and learned so much about writing and editing. Instead of an intern, what I really need is a babysitter! Sometimes my folks will watch the kids so I can get extra writing done.
Babysitters work too, Tamara!!!
It’s sooo funny because Sam is teaching me that I can relax a bit and just let her do her thing…I don’t think I realized the insane pace I’ve been going at. It does feel good to sit back a bit and let her work her magic.
I told her yesterday that I can’t believe the number of new pages I’ve produced the last couple of days because she’s handling some of the day-to-day running of the empire stuff that I used to do too.
Maybe you didn’t realize the insane pace you’ve been keeping but I think the regular readers of this blog have! LOL!
Good one, Liz!
LOL!!!
But, just for clarification…it’s fine to be crazy if you’re crazy is working for you!
Can I get an intern to go to my day job? No?
I’ll be looking forward to hearing Sam the Intern adventures.
And love – Epublishing Empire!
Getting an intern for your day job? Now that would be superfab awesome sauce!!!
I luuuvvv the term “Epublishing Empire” too, Liz, and it sooo fits the multi-media businesses we’re each creating and running every day!!!
I think if I had an intern, I would do what you have done and pass on the promotion and marketing side of the business to them, as I am not that good at it. Yes, definitely that so I could concentrate on my writing whilst someone else was promoting me. This is why I like being with my epublisher. She is doing the editing for me, and is hiring an online marketing team to do all the emarketing whilst she focuses on the editing and design side, and I can work my magic with a pen.
I’m still doing all my own promo and marketing, for the most part, Julie, because that way it’s genuine to and for my readers, and I do sooo enjoy spending time in all my online communities.
What Sam is doing is all the design work that I’ve wanted to do all along to jazz up all my online communities. That’s the stuff I have a gazillion ideas what to do but don’t have the techno expertise she does to pull it off.
What I luuuvvv most about the Indie Epublishing World is that EVERYTHING we do is under our control and working for our best interests, not some other company’s interests, but our own. And no one will ever work as hard for you as you! So, by using an intern, you get the best of both worlds!
Great idea- I plan to look into getting an intern as well because it sounds like wonderful idea!
You will be amazed at what all an intern can do for you, Lois! And wow is Sam building quite a resume and in her case, a wonderful portfolio of her design work!
This idea fascinated me the moment you first mentioned it DD. I’m trying to bite the bullet and quit the day job to write full time, but there are a few things I want to line up first and I think an intern will help me do that.
Looking forward to your posts Sam!
You will beyond flourish with the help of an intern, Nana! Gosh, I wish I’d have thought of using one sooner!!!
And cheers to you for figuring out how to get out of your day job and write full time!!!
After quitting my day job in 2009, I made some HUGE sacrifices and spent a couple beyond lean years, but wow has it all been worth it!!!
It sounds so interesting to hear all about Sam’s work for you! Congrats to you Sam……..I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun along the way of your new journey with D.D.!
We are having a ball together, Jeanne! It’s just sooo fun to spin an idea with her, and then a couple of days later, I’m “looking at” a gorgeous mock-up that’s my idea come to life! For example, wait till y’all see the ticket for the Bootscootin’ Bash! It’s just a total show-stopper!!!
Welcome to WG2E, Sam! I’m sure you’ll have a great time and learn a ton of things from DD. Now a question for DD – how did you find/pick Sam to be your intern?
Great question, Kristine!
I happen to know Sam and adore her. She was telling me about an internship program she had applied for at Indiana University (in Bloomington) where she’s a junior majoring in graphic design and photography. For the program, the students serve as interns for an entire semester, and you, as their mentor, work with their academic advisers to develop their curriculum, projects and tasks as they pertain to the majors involved.
So, I worked out all that with her advisers ( I had to fill out some paperwork), but decided I’d like for her to start now instead of waiting till the Fall Semester.
So she started as my intern this summer and then will continue through the Fall Semester as well! She’s not allowed to receive payment for her work during school because she’s getting credits toward her majors, but I can pay her all Summer long.
If you contact colleges in your area (as well as outside the area too…you’d just work online with your intern), you can set-up these wonderful arrangements for your own intern too!!!
Sounds like a great partnership, DD! I’ve often thought about hiring a student from the local university to help me catch up on those little things (entering books in contests, sending out prizes, researching blog sites, fixing my website when I’ve somehow messed it up–again!)
Best of luck to Sam!
xx, Lauren
Those are all great jobs for an intern, Lauren, and you’ll be giving them a wonderful addition to their resumes! It’s a total win-win!
You go, Sam!
I’ll second that!!!
