WG2E-Land: Check Out Amazon’s New Author Rank!

TGIF, WG2E-Land!

Here’s a Brand New Feature from Amazon’s Author Central that’s just superfab fun and informative…

Author Rank

The October announcement from The Zon was as follows:

Announcing Amazon Author Rank
October 9, 2012 3:55 AM

Today we have added a new feature, Amazon Author Rank, the definitive list of best-selling authors on Amazon.com.  This list makes it easy for readers to discover the best-selling authors on Amazon.com overall and within a selection of major genres.

Amazon Author Rank is your rank based on the sales of all of your books on Amazon.com.  Just like Amazon Best Sellers, it is updated hourly.  The top 100 authors overall and the top 100 in selected genres will be displayed on Amazon.com.  You can see your Amazon Author Rank trended over time in Author Central.

You can find your Amazon Author Rank in Author Central under the Rank tab. Historical rank data is available from September 28, 2012.

We’re always interested in feedback, so please let us know what you think.

I just luuuvvv this new feature as it really helps me see exactly where I stand (taking into account my entire backlist) when compared to all authors on Amazon!

For example, I can see the relative effect of making Amazon’s Movers & Shakers List, when I sell 300-500 books per day of just one title (like I did on or around December 3rd), which put my Author Rank at a high (since stats are available from September 28, 2012) of #721.

My daily average Author Rank appears to now be between the 2000 – 2500 mark. I’m tickled with that. There are millions of authors on The Zon, right?

I also like that they’re adding this info, once you hit the Top 100 in select genres, right to your books’ Amazon Pages! I’ve seen it several times on my books’ pages now!

Anything to boost visibility and crank up your algorithm results is golden to me!

And yes, I’ve read all the whining about this new feature on several discussion boards, but I just don’t see how it can hurt anyone! How can any “free” extra boost you get from The Zon in their algorithms be a bad thing? What do y’all think?

    Hi DD,

Thanks for the heads-up on this new Amazon feature. I think it’s great. And congrats on the fab book sales!

    • D.D. Scott says:

Sure thing, Sheri! I luv that we now have a better idea as to the quantities that the authors at the top are moving on a daily/hourly basis.

And thanks bunches for the sweet shout-out!

  2. I got that email, but it made not sense to me until YOU explained it in non-Zon English :-)

Thanks for another very helpful post!

    • D.D. Scott says:

U betchya, Anna! :-) Whenever I see a new feature from The Zon, I take a month or two to just sit back and soak in all of the data, read all of the initial reactions then wait to see what it means to me and how it fits into my publishing empire goals and philosophies.

  3. Hi DD,

I entirely agree. Any ‘free’ boost the mighty Zon can give us authors if fine by me. I look at my rankings about every 8 days or so and it’s great fun seeing how a dozen or so books sold in one day makes a big difference. I’m not in the top 100 rankings at the moment (have been) but being in the top 1000 for action & adventure, the top 700 for mystery and thrillers and 1000 for romance is pretty good out of a few million authors! I also wonder if Zon are going to add this feature to the UK amazon site. Thanks for a good, fun post DD and have yourself and all the team a very Merry Christmas!

    • D.D. Scott says:

Oh, that’s a great question, Faith…I thought it was available to all authors via Amazon’s Author Central…Is that how you guys create your Amazon UK Author Pages (via Author Central)?

And congrats to you for doing fabulously well in your books’ categories. It all starts by climbing to the Top 100 in the bestseller lists for individual categories…then you pick up steam across genres too!

  4. Thanks for the info, D.D.! And it doesn’t surprise me at all that you’re at the top of the list!

    • D.D. Scott says:

You’re sooo welcome, Riley! And thanks bunches for the sweet message! I’ve got a long ways to go to break into that all elusive Top 100 (across all genres) again! But I know I can do it again!!! WooHooo!!! :-) I’m just tickled to know exactly the kind of numbers I need to get there!!!

  5. Joe Bruno says:

    Thanks D. D. I didn’t know this author’s rank feature existed.

I checked this morning on Amazon Central and found my author’s rank on Kindle was #3630.

When I clicked on “Biographies and Memoirs, it rose to # 708.

My coffee will definitely taste sweeter this morning thanks to your information.

  6. Angela B says:

One of the things of being a newbie on the scene is that I’m just getting exposed to the algorithms, formulas, hoopty-loos and whatnot in figuring how things work. So I’m not a complainer or a cheerlearder. I’m learning. Maybe that puts me in a unique spot since I have no bias one way or another.

    • D.D. Scott says:

Atta Girl, Angela! That’s the key…just keep your mind open and study how each new feature and sales tool works for you and your publishing goals and philosophies.

  7. I’m lovin’ it! Congratulations on your high rankings – you’ve certainly worked hard enough for it!

    • D.D. Scott says:

      Thanks bunches, Nancy!!!

I just luv this new feature and think we can all learn a ton from it!!!

For example, we can see what making a Top 100 in any given category does to your overall sales and rank too! Then, compare that to a Movers & Shakers List appearance and so forth. Any milestone can now be taken into the big picture to see what kinds of things really boost your Amazon Author Rank. :-)

  8. I love the new feature and find it very useful. I was amazed to see I rank much higher in romantic suspense than any other category, so I’m going to put “romantic suspense” into my metadata. Also I find the whole thing very empowering. To find out I’m in the top 500 in romantic suspense on all of Amazon feels pretty good. And congrats on your great ranking, DD !

    • D.D. Scott says:

Great points, Anne!!! I haven’t really studied how I’m stacking up in all of my books’ genres, but that’s next on my To Do List!

And you go girl with your romantic suspense rank!!! Fabulous!!!

Thanks for the sweet shout-out too!!!

  9. Lynn Kelley says:

Woo hoo, congrats on the wonderful author rankings, D.D.! I did notice that they added this, but it looks like I have a ways to go before reaching top rankings. Another good goal to shoot for, though, right? Hope you have an awesome Christmas and rockin’ New Year!
